The aim of this Level 3 Diploma in Sports Massage is to train learners with the knowledge and skills to be able to provide sports massage therapy to a range of clients who have dysfunctional tissue, without acute/post-acute injuries or underlying pathological conditions.

Entry Requirements

There are no specific entry requirements. There is an element of communication involved (discussing, presenting, reading and writing) and learners should have basic skills in communication pitched at level 3. Performing sports massage is a physical activity and learners will need to be fit enough to carry this out.

Course Content

Learners must complete the five mandatory units

Unit 1.  Anatomy and Physiology for Sports Massage J/506/7220

Unit 2. Principles of Health and Fitness R/506/7222

Unit 3. Understand the Principles of Soft Tissue Dysfunction Y/506/7223

Unit 4. Professional Practice in Sports Massage D/506/7224

Unit 5. Sports Massage Treatments T/506/7228

Aim:

To provide learners with the knowledge and skills to be able to: • Provide sports massage therapy to a range of clients who have dysfunctional tissue, without acute/post acute injuries or underlying pathological conditions.

Objectives:

To provide learners with the knowledge and skills to be able to:

• Assess clients and construct a sports massage treatment plan.

• Understand the principles of soft tissue dysfunction.

• Understand how to determine the appropriate techniques for specific clients.

• Apply a range of sports massage techniques and understand their effects on the body.

Progression

This qualification provides progression on to level 4 Certificate in Sports Massage Therapy. You may want to expand your health and fitness knowledge. At a later date you may want to progress into teaching.

The aim of this level 4 Certificate in Sports Therapy is to provide learners with the skills and knowledge to be able to do the following; understand the clinical procedures for client assessment and treatment planning. Conduct objective physical assessments. Understand the purpose of neuromuscular and tissue mobilisation techniques in sports massage and the skills to be able to apply effective neuromuscular and tissue mobilisation techniques. Utilise soft tissue techniques appropriate to specific clients. Understand treatment modalities to support soft tissue repair.

• Treat and/or seek to correct common patterns of dysfunction and suitable pre-diagnosed injuries.

Objectives: To provide learners with the skills and knowledge to be able to:

• Understand the clinical procedures for client assessment and treatment planning.

• Conduct objective physical assessments.

• Understand the purpose of neuromuscular and tissue mobilisation techniques in sports massage and the skills to be able to apply effective neuromuscular and tissue mobilisation techniques.

• Utilise soft tissue techniques appropriate to specific clients.

• Understand treatment modalities to support soft tissue repair.

Progression

This qualification provides progression on to further specialist training in sports massage and routes into fitness instructing. You may even want to go down the teaching route at a later stage.
